Cascara Sagrada has been part of the American Pharmacopoeia since 1890. The active ingredient is cascarosides , which have a carthatic action , inducing the intestine to increase muscle tone (peristalsis), causing movement of the intestines. It is a mild laxative, unlike other laxatives it does not destroy the intestinal flora, nor does it eliminate bacilli present in the gastro-intestinal tract, it increases gallbladder secretions, ideal for gallbladder stones. Cascara sagrada is recommended to eliminate constipation and constipation.
